1980 Hustler 4

An unregistered Hustler just as it left its maker.

HISTORY
Purchased new by a Mr Brown, a deposit of £862.50 was paid in September 1980 and the car was delivered in December 1980. A Mini 1275cc engine and gearbox were sourced in December 1980 and built by Jonspeed Racing of Nuneaton. Five 6×10 Weller wheels were purchased from Midland Accessories in August 1980, lots of other Mini parts including two subframes were also purchased from a company called Recycled. All part were fitted to the car except the fuel tank (still with it). That’s where things stopped and the car sat (in doors) for the next 46 years until the owners sad passing this year. Never registered hence no V5, we think this could restored to exactly William Towns original vision (this is a very early car with the single piece metal ‘chassis’, the later cars were a ‘sandwich’ type) or maybe a motorbike engine conversion or even a full EV – imagine a modern iPad style screen on that untouched dashboard and the car silently delivering you to your boat in Monaco!

SPECIFICATION
A very early Hustler, we think this could be one of the first 10 cars as it has the full roof metal bar that was deleted on later cars, the one piece ‘chassis’ and the original floor design made for mounting plastic school chairs with no legs. A 4 speed manual gearbox and Mini 1275cc engine, Weller wheels including spare, original HUSTLER stickers, hinged flip back ‘sunroof’.

CONDITION
This is a barn find but in remarkable condition, the sub frames look very clean with no significant rust and the all-important metal ‘chassis’ has surface rust but is super solid. There is some damage to small areas of the glassfibre floor, easily fixed. The engine has not been touched in 46 year and therefore assume a full rebuild. Tyres are 46 years old but still hold air and look in remarkable condition as do the wheels. The steering column is installed and works but is not completely secured. Box of old bits and a complete fuel tank but assume the other bits are scrap. A unique bit of UK motoring design history that would be very hard to replicate.
