1998 Mercedes A140 Classic
One of – if not the first UK A-class restored by Mercedes Benz UK to a very high standard.
HISTORY
Our A-Class shows as an Experimental, Press/Test car on the VIN check and was the actual car used by Autocar for its first UK road test. Motoring journalist Andrew Frankel purchased the car from Mercedes UK and the car left the Frankel household in 2010 after a minor accident (documented in the Mercedes Owners Club Magazine, The Gazette) and shown in pictures below. Despite only minor damage to the bumper and bonnet, the car has a Cat D marker due to its low market value at the time. Once back with Mercedes it was restored to as-new condition. When Mr Frankel drove the car for a retrospective Autocar road-test (pic below and at https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/class-its-own-revisiting-original-mercedes-class) he purchased the car back to go into his small collection. Due to lack of use it was sold to the last owner who took the car to Mercedes to do a major service costing £1,729. The car was garaged and rarely used and due to failing health the current owner decided to sell. The car is now with us and presents in almost as-new condition and has just had a fresh MOT with no advisories, current until January 2025. The car has had 5 owners (two Mercedes and 2 the Frankels) and now sits on 87,300 miles. We are soon to be visited by another car magazine so the car will be documented in print once again. We have a ream of documentation, including invoices, letters, magazines, V5Cs and MOT certificates. The service book shows 15 stamps, the last 2,300 miles ago. A little bit of Mercedes history.
